Navagio Beach (Shipwreck Beach)

As you sail into through the wide passageway flanked by soaring limestone cliffs, you are a voyageur, a swashbuckling pirate back to seek the lost treasures of Shipwreck beach.

Shipwreck beach, also known as Navagio Beach, gets its characteristic name from the Panagiotis, a runaway boat from the 80s that beached on its shores after being caught with its cargo of contraband cigarettes. Exposed to the harsh wind and waves, the steel structure has rusted and corroded over time to leave behind the skeleton of a freight liner. The secluded bay area is accessible only by boat and visitors are often shuttled around the beach on a tight schedule. Getting a head start early in the morning will reward you with the sound of waves lapping against the gravel, ground over time by the ocean, as the first rays of dawn paint the skies with splashes of pink and orange.

While at the beach, visitors can look forward to taking a dive into the waters but be careful as the waters run several meters deep. Avid photographers can choose instead to take to the roads and make their way to the platform overlooking the steep cliffs for that perfect panorama. Needless to say, don’t leave this picturesque jewel out of your swashbuckling adventures.

Tips Before You Go
The most common way to reach the beach is by boat yet this does the splendid views an injustice. The best shots are taken from atop the limestone bluffs which are only accessibly by road from Zakynthos. Visitors would either need to rent a car or take a taxi to the jutting platforms by the cliff. Once above the cliffs, it is also impossible to make your way down directly, requiring you to return to a boat stop before chartering a boat to the beachfront. A lot of effort but the majestic views often erase whatever regrets were at the back of your mind.
