Admire the magnificent display of tiles.

One of its kind in the world, the National Azulejo Museum is the repository of an astounding array of rare tiles spanning from the 15th century till modern times. Showcasing five centuries of azulejos (ceramic tiles), there are also explanations on how they are created. This delightful museum is set in the lovely Madre de Deus Convent, a lovely Convent representative of Portugese Baroque architecture, was founded in 1509 by Queen D. Leonor. Marvel at the elegantly embellished panels in the ceiling with gilded and beautifully carved wood.

Start your journey from the first floor where the tiles are showcased in chronological order. From the Moorish tiles characteristic of the 15th century to the more contemporary artistic interpretations of present day, there is much to see! Admire the wonderful paintings that depict scenes from the Life of the Virgin. However, the crown jewel of the museum has to be the breath-taking blue and white composition of 1300 tiles, made in 1738, which displays the cityscape of Lisbon. Feast your eyes on the incredible details of the 23m long masterpiece. This museum is certainly worth a visit to appreciate the azulejos – a unique aspect of Portuguese culture.
