National Portrait Gallery, London

Here at the National Portrait Gallery, look out for a familiar face in the crowd.

As its name suggests, the National Portrait Gallery showcases portraits of famous or important Britons and was the first of its kind when it opened its doors to the public in 1856. The portraits are chosen based on the subject rather than the artist and hence features a wide range of styles in painting and quality of work. Most of the works featured here offer a more intellectual satiation, providing visitors with a visual account of the important figures in history whereas in the history books they might have been identified only by their names. The most famous portrait in this gallery would perhaps be the one that was first acquired - that of William Shakespeare, dating back to the 17th Century. Till this day, there are still arguments over whether the identity of the subject really is the great playwright himself. Now, you can join in on the argument! For the perfect finish to your visit, consider the rooftop restaurant which offers spectacular views across the London skyline.
