National Museum of Finland

Kickstart your visit to Finland with a glimpse into her story.

The National Museum of Finland stands out - literally and figuratively. Its early 20th-century architecture is an iconic representation of the National Romantic style that traversed Finland and Scandinavian countries in that time. Its high steeple tower, rising above the rest of the structure, might remind you of Finland's medieval churches and castles. Well, don't stick around outside (and don't falter when you see the bear statue watching you). The interior is just as rich, if not more, and that's pronounced from the first step you take to enter the entrance hall. It features a stunning set of ceiling frescoes, drawing inspiration from the 19th-century Finnish collection of epic poetry titled "Kalevala".

There are six sections to the permanent exhibition, taking you through 10 000 years of Finnish history, from prehistoric to modern times. The glint of silver and coins will catch your attention at The Treasure Troves, which features exhibits ranging from medals to weapons. The Prehistory is home to the largest archaeological exhibition in all of Finland (that is, ancient swords, relics and the end of the Ice Age!), and if you make your way to The Realm, history buffs will be thrilled to immerse themselves in Finnish culture and society, dating from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century. Don’t forget to stop by the Vintti, where the junior explorers can try their hand at fixing a jigsaw puzzle of the Finnish map, among many other activities at this interactive exhibit. A treasure you can’t miss while here!
