National Museum of Cambodia

Feast your eyes upon the finest collection of Khmer artefacts in the world.

Housed in an elegant terracotta structure and enclosed by a lovely courtyard garden, the National Museum of Cambodia is the world’s largest repository of Khmer art, sculptures, ceramics and ethnographic items which date back to prehistoric times. With a plethora of highlights, the crown jewel is quite possibly the resplendent West Mebon Temple’s reclining bronze statue of Vishnu.

Look out also for the awe-inspiring ‘Staring Harihara’, which is an intriguing amalgam of Shiva and Vishnu with its origins from Prasat Andet in Kompong Thom Province. Do not leave without seeing the amusing pair of gigantic wrestling monkeys which were found in Koh Ker in the 10th century. Truly a gem of a museum, no visit to Cambodia is complete without a trip here.

Tips Before You Go
Don’t come into the museum expecting a narrative like the Killing Fields. It’s more of a large exhibition displaying valuable Khmer relics. Think of it as more of an art gallery than a historical tour.
