Kuala Lumpur City, Malaysia
National Museum, Kuala Lumpur

Built in the traditional architectural style of the Minangkabau, it houses the relics of Malaysia’s history and rich cultural diversity.

Sitting majestically along Jalan Damansara, one of the major roads leading into the city, the National Museum is built in the style of the Minangkabau, one of the many local ethnic races. Its design was inspired by the architecture of the many Malay royal palaces that were built in the nation, with its sweeping red-sloped roof a tribute to Minangkabau craftsmanship. Of course, upon reaching the main entrance, you’ll be greeted by 2 immense Italian murals that give you a glimpse of Malaysia’s culture and history, a fitting preview to what you would expect to find in this fantastic musuem.

The museum’s displays range from cultural and ceremonial events such as weddings, to ceramics, instruments, and flora and fauna. The museum stands on the site that was once home to the Selangor Museum, which was bombed at the end of World War II. In the vicinity of the main building, there are a number of outdoor displays, as well as an old Terengganu timber palace that showcases beautiful wood-carving from the 19th century. The museum’s Central Hall is ornately decorated with mosaic tiles, lending itself to a beautiful sight, and plays host to the temporary exhibitions that are regularly showcased at the musuem. Should you want a taste of Malaysia’s cultural and historical heritage, the National Museum is surely the place for you to be!
