Designed by the architect José Leite de Vasconcelos, the National Archaeology Museum is home to the largest and most significant collection of archaeological findings in Portugal! The exhibits are mainly divided into two permanent collections – one concentrating on the historical relics of Portugal and the other devoted to Egyptian antiques.


Marvel at the glittering collection of over 1,000 pieces of gold jewellery and the fascinating Roman mosaics! These exquisite pieces actually date all the way back to prehistoric times. Do not miss out on the imposing granite Lusitanian Warriors, dating back to 1st century AD, their magnificence is truly one that welcomes you as you enter. Egyptian antiquities are the museum’s forte! With a vast range of funerary masks, to several sarcophagi and statues, several years of Egyptian history is covered here. A great place to learn and admire the historical treasures of mankind, this museum is highly recommended while in Lisbon.

The Museum is adjacent to the Jeronimos Monastery; so do drop by both attractions to maximize your time here. The Museum offers free entry on Sunday Mornings, or otherwise free with the Lisbon card, thus do plan your visit accordingly.
