Nara Park (奈良公園)

One of the oldest public parks in Japan!

The Nara Park is a public park located in Japan, at the foot of Mount Wakakusa. It traces its history all the way back to the 1300s, making it one of the oldest public parks of its kind in Japan. It was officially given the title of one of the ‘Places of Scenic Beauty’ and it prides itself of its over 1200 wild ska deer which roam freely within the park compound. The numerous deers in the park were previously regarded as divine figures according to a folklore. However, after WWII, they were sadly stripped of that title. Presently, they are considered national treasures!

Its total compound size spans over 660 hectares to include the gorounds of the Todaiji, Kofukuji and Kasuga Shrines as well. Rickshaw services known as Jinrikisha can be found near the entrances to these shrines. In addition, the park also houses the Nara National Museum and Todaiji which houses the largest wooden building in the world housing a 15 metre tall Buddha statue.
