Naples Cathedral (Duomo di Napoli, Naples)

A medieval cathedral featuring many intrinsic artworks, frescos, altarpieces, remains of the Early Christina basilica, and the miraculous blood of San Gennaro.

The Naples Cathedral in Italy hosts the blood liquefication ceremony, also known as the festival of San Gennaro, the Patron Saint of Naples, thrice every year, for which tourists from across the globe flock this Gothic church. The vial containing the dried blood of San Gennaro or Saint Januarius when he was beheaded, is brought out twice a year when it is scheduled to liquify, and if it doesn’t, legend has it that that some misfortune will fall on Naples. The severed head and the bones of the Saint are also present in the Cathedral. The Naples Cathedral also features the Chapel of San Gennaro.

The Cathedral also houses the Basilica Santa Restituta and the Byzantine San Giovanni, which is the oldest baptistery to have survived. One of the main attractions of the Naples Cathedral is the Royal Chapel, the walls of which have been decorated with the frescoes by Giovanni Lanfranco and Domenichino.
