See the very first Roman Catholic parish church in South Korea and admire its breath-taking interior.
The Myeongdong Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral Church of the Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception is one of the earliest and most prominent examples of Gothic Revival architecture and Catholicism in Korea. Designated as a National Historic Site, the cathedral stands right smack in the heart of Korea at an impressive height of 45m, which includes the steeple and clock.
Admire the façade of the cathedral, which was made using twenty different types of red and grey bricks. Step inside and gaze at the high ceilings and beautiful stained glass windows which depict the Nativity of Jesus, Adoration of the Magi, Jesus with the Twelve Apostles and the Fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary. Do not miss out on visiting the crypt, which contains the remains of nine Church martyrs of Korea. This is definitely a must-visit while in Seoul, as the Cathedral chronicles its people’s expression in faith & religion, as well as that of its historical significance.
