Museum of Sydney

For panoramic views of Sydney from 1788 till today splashed across the building’s walls.

Aptly built over and around the remains of Australia’s very first Government House, the Museum of Sydney showcases the character and soul of both, colonial and contemporary Sydney through artifacts, images, and new digital media techniques. Indeed, the Museum prizes its heritage very much, even boasting foundations of the original Government House - many of which were excavated by archaelogists before the construction of the Museum - in distinct glass displays the Museum's forecourt and foyer.

There are many interesting exhibitions including state-of-the-art installations as well as an enormous video spine that displays panoramic views of Sydney from 1788 till today, stretched across the building’s walls. There was also a historical discovery of original footings of the first house, unearthed by archaeologists in 1983, which are now featured at the museum. Be transported back to the past you discover and learn more about the origins of this famed city and discover more about what the city was like during the convict era. The Museum also boasts exhibitions narrating the contributions and lives of many of the colony's influential people. A treat for those absolutely relentless to learn more about the city's past, the Museum of Sydney is definitely for those who are looking for some culture and history!
