Museum of Medieval Stockholm

This quirky museum proves that History is not always boring as the people, stories and buildings of medieval Stockholm come to life before your eyes.

This little gem would not exist if it were not for a major excavation between 1978-1980 that unearthed valuable historical relics. The remains of these medieval structures were deemed worthy of being preserved as heritage monuments, giving rise to the construction of the museum. The exhibits featured are 55 metres of the original town wall built in the 1530s and the churchyard of the medieval Helgeandshuset (House of the Holy Spirit). The museum allows visitors to travel back in time to medieval Stockholm, complete with brick houses, workshops, gallows and a harbour. You can explore the museum on your own, but for those looking for a more immersive experience, free guided tours in English are available subject to booking and audio books are offered in various languages with a rental fee.

Themed exhibitions, along with lectures, symposiums and programmes make your visit not only a fun and unique experience, but also an educational one as you learn about the history of the city from the 1250s to the 1520s. This also makes the museum an ideal excursion for school groups, as well as an engaging visit for families with children. Don’t forget to bring along some money, as the museum shop offers an enticing array of books, souvenirs and knick-knacks which will be sure to tempt you. We can’t deny that the free admission is certainly another added bonus!
