The only museum for contemporary Latin American art in the United States.
Once the site of the world’s most productive silent film studio in the world, the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) is located in Long Beach, California’s developing East Village Arts District and is the only museum in the United States dedicated to modern and contemporary Latin American art. The exhibition galleries of the museum are also located on the site of the popular roller skating rink, the Hippodrome. Though roller skating may have gone out of fashion, the beautiful architecture of the building that was unveiled as the museum in 1996, has not. The area has a long history of art and culture, and MOLAA, in partnership with the Smithsonian Institute, aims to bring culture and intellectually-stimulating exhibitions to it.
The exhibitions on display are carefully selected (two to three years in advance, according to MOLAA!), though yearly events like Día de los Muertos are always celebrated with innovative and beautiful exhibits. In addition to the temporary exhibitions, the museum also has a large permanent collection of over 1,500 pieces of paintings, sculptures and mixed-media pieces, and a large 15,000 sq. ft. garden of many sculptures, with its own performing arts venue for events.
