Museum of Gothenburg

“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” 12,000 years of rich and vibrant history has made Gothenburg the beautiful city we all know and love today, and all you want to know about it is right here at the Museum of Gothenburg.

Anna Danielsson

Itself a 1750s Swedish East India Company building, the Museum of Gothenburg simply exudes history. From the moment you step through the entrance, the city walk map “walk with me” invites you to take a journey through Gothenburg both literally and figuratively, completely free of charge. The museum’s permanent collection consists of nearly 1 million objects and 2 million images. Relics from Archaeological digs reveal more about Sweden in the Stone Age. The singular culture of Gothenburg is brought to life through the many costumes, crafts, musical instruments and furniture, as well as special East Indian porcelain China. The theatre scene was huge in Gothenburg, as evident from the vast collection of manuscripts, programmes, posters, sketches, costumes and the like. photos, letters, furniture, diaries, archaeological finds, newspaper clippings and drawings, cars, clothes and much more. Students today will delight in contrasting the stuff they’re familiar with today with the textbooks, desks, tools and models and apparatus of times passed. One of the main highlights is Sweden’s only preserved Viking ship, which sheds light on the differences between bourgeois life and the 19th century trade union struggle.

Locals love to head to the museum study, where they can trace their roots with extensive archives and library. Watch your young ones scramble around the Children’s Museuming scaling high-rise buildings, squeezing through tunnels, ride a ferris wheel, swinging on the Eriksberg crane and generally having fun learning about the city in an interactive and active way.
