Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations (MUCEM)

An educational experience in European and Mediterranean civilisation.

Opened in 2013 after Marseille was declared the cultural capital of Europe, this museum was dedicated to the European and Mediterranean civilisation from the Early Antiquity to the present day. Inside, visitors can get to know more about the people in the Mediterranean Sea area, and gain new knowledge such as the colonisation of Algeria, or the beach culture of the French Riviera.

Besides the exhibits, this distinctive cube-shaped building is an attraction in itself. Built on reclaimed land at the entrance of the harbour, it sits like an island, with a bridge that connects the building to Fort Saint-Jean. The building's unique design also allows sunlight to filter through the whimsically shaped façade delicately - providing a beautifully well-lit environment for visitors to explore the exhibits within. End off your trip with a stroll in the gardens at the top of Fort Saint-Jean for a panoramic view of the city and the sea!
