Uppsala, Sweden
Museum Gustavianum

Immersed in a world where dissections were normal, fashioned to be shows, this museum is nothing ordinary.

Situated in Uppsala University, Museum Gustavianum is the oldest section of the university – the Gustavianum. Built in the 17th century, the second oldest anatomical theatre in the world has been given a new life, revamped and included into a museum with the same name.

Forming the cupola on the university, Museum Gustavianum features five permanent exhibits. The most intriguing of all, the gruesome anatomical theatre, minus the blood, thankfully. The anatomical theatre operated like a show, where students and people alike could sit around, watching as dissection after dissection happened. Following that, the Augsburg Art Cabinet is the next exhibit you must check out! An exquisite cabinet, every inch of it is decorated in the most intricate way possible. Gemstones, hidden compartments and miniature paintings, these are just the tip of the iceberg. In the cabinet, you will be surprised by the amount of “collectibles” hidden inside. From a dried baby crocodile, scientific instruments, ivory sculptures, you never know what to expect from this trinket cabinet. As you continue roaming this ancient building, you will be greeted by some of the most spectacular sarcophagi! Viking artefacts are no stranger here as well, seen in the Viking exhibit. Continue venturing in this museum where there is plenty more to discover. Truly bringing together artefacts from all over the world, you are in for a history lesson from way back, spanning across many countries.
