Museum Dr. Guislain

A one-of-a-kind mental health museum in Belgium!

The Museum Dr. Guislain is a one-of-a-kind mental health museum in Ghent, Belgium. Located in a 1857 gothic psychiatric hospital, the oldest to be found in Belgium, the museum was named as such due to Dr. Guislain, who fought fervently for the rights of those mentally incapacitated to be respected by advocating for more humane treatments of mental patients – a time and era long gone when patients were still chained to their beds. Offering its visitors a multicultural experience that is aimed at showcasing the history of psychiatric practice from both Greek and Eastern histories, ranging from ancient trepanning to modern day brain scans. A museum which prides itself in its interactive elements, brace yourself as you administer a series of tests, even one from as late as the 19th century, made available on a computer module. That is not all as you will witness before you an international collection of art brut as well.

Whether you are in for the educational journey or simply to satisfy your curiosity, this experience will be sure to excite, scare and intrigue visitors, both the young and the old!
