Museo Xul Solar

An intimate art museum occupying the former home of eccentric artist Xul Solar.

For the art lover, you will likely be familiar with the name Xul Solar, an artist that was a polymath in many ways - a painter and sculptor primarily, but also a linguist who created two of his own conlangs (constructed languages). He wanted to create a “universal club” called Pan Klub for those who shared his eclectic intellectual pursuits, and fifty years later, his widow inaugurated the Fundación Pan Klub, the foundation that turned his house into a museum housing his peculiar artwork, writings and, most importantly, his vision.

Nevertheless, you don’t need to know anything about Xul Solar’s intellectual interests to visit the place, you don’t even need an art degree to simply admire his complex and beautiful sculptures, featuring striking contrasts and colours. His old mansion and current museum features over 80 of his unique, almost cartoonish artworks against cubist and surrealist backgrounds. His conlangs, as well as his eclectic interests in astrology, serpents and other mythical imagery, are present in his artworks as well, making for an enjoyable experience in the mystic and goth in all of us.

Despite being contained within his living space, this museum isn’t like the typical “casa” experience you find at the former houses of William Shakespeare or Lenin. You will not find much of Xul Solar’s bedroom or living spaces here, as the entire house has been completely transformed into an exhibition commemorating all of his works.

Tips Before You Go
Guided tours are provided at 4pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 3:30pm on Saturdays, but only in Spanish. If you’re interested in an English-speaking tour guide, you should email the museum in advance to check if they can make arrangements. There is a small entrance fee, so even if you know nothing about Xul Solar, you should spend an afternoon visiting the private museum, as he is considered one of Argentina’s national treasures and a friend to famous poet Jorge Luis Borges.
