Museo Lapidario Maffeiano

See the historical treasures that were once looted by Napoleon’s troops in the 19th century, but now return to Verona.

Established by Francesco Scipione Maffei between 1718 and 1727, the Museo Lapidario Maffeiano is amongst one of Europe’s most ancient public museums, instituted in 1745. With about 650 items passionately collected by Maffei, visitors can admire the fascinating relics from the Early Venetian, Etruscan, Greek and Roman periods. Be astounded by the sight of Italy’s biggest collection of Greek grave inscriptions from the 5th century BC to 4th century AD. Gaze at the intricate depictions of daily life in Ancient Greece. See the amazing Roman sarcophagus of a young man and the Etruscan urns. Head for the courtyard and portico to marvel at the 230 inscriptions, reliefs, sarcophagi and sculptures on display. This museum is a must-see for history buffs.
