Paper might have first been produced off the banks of a river in China but the rapid spread of its usage meant variants and improvement were splintering at an unstoppable pace throughout the world. Guess it or not, Amalfi was a hub of parchment creation with the art of parchment creation being woven together in its mills along the rivers and coast.

Within the oldest paper mill in Europe, this tradition lives on. What began as cotton based parchment production evolved into paper made of wood-pulp and each stage of this transformation is chronicled through the press printed exhibit signs and write-ups. Within underground stone chambers and reconstructed workshops, artisanal paper products continue to be churned out by the fully functional paper presses unaltered from their point of creation dating back a century or more. In fact robed craftsmen add a touch of authenticity by continuing to practice their art, handling the wood implements with utmost care as they reveal their art to you. Even as you read this digital record, it would be impossible to deny the revolutionary nature of paper and parchment, the value of which continues to drive the whirring clack of the wooden press at the heart of the Museo dela Carta.

In the museum, you can even take part in the paper creation process yourself, operating portions of the press to create your very own handmade souvenir.
