Museo de Arte Popular Jose Hernandez

Art is the heart and soul of the people.

It might seem almost paradoxical that a museum for folk art should be located in the heart of conservative neighbourhood Palermo. But the Jose Hernadez Folk Art Museum was built at a time when the influential men of the city came together and tried to define what represented their country and their culture. The museum takes its name from a journalist who was deeply rooted in his heritage, and wrote as a man of the countryside. Thus it is fitting that this museum should honour his legacy by celebrating the art and crafts of the countryside; of the Creole tradition and the indigenous natives. Here you can find Mapuche textiles such as ponchos, intricate gaucho-related silverwork such as knives and mate sets, and many more. The exhibits form a rich tapestry that speaks of Argentina’s well-preserved traditional culture and local heritage. You will be amazed by the sheer diversity of mankind’s creativity. The crafts span every material imaginable; from pottery, leather and wood to bone, glass and musical instruments. Even if you are not an art lover or crafty person yourself, you cannot fail to appreciate the painstaking care put into these items.
