Museo de Arte de Rio

Discover Rio’s history in art – within art.

Even from afar, the Museo de Arte de Rio (or MAR) makes for a captivating sight. Joining the past to the present (literally), the MAR is the rebirth of Palacete Dom João VI, linked to a modern building made of glass (the Escola de Olhar) and perfect 90-degree angles. Above, the wavy roof stretches over both of them. The museum was also the perfect chance to transform the image of this once-derelict part of the city, encouraging both visitors and locals to come and discover the turbulent history of Rio and its rich culture.

When you enter, one of the first few things you can enjoy is actually the beauty of nature. The lift will take you to the top floor of the modern half and open up into a breathtaking landscape: the dark waters of Guanabara Bay and the impressive bridge running across it, along with the captivating stretch of Rio’s port district. Head back into the museum to discover the various exhibitions that are housed in the Palacete section. Discover contemporary pieces like Projeto Morrinho. It is a replica of the amazing contemporary art that started out as the pastime of a 14-year-old boy in the Morrinho favela of Brazil, painting a different picture of the country’s slums. Past exhibitions have included historic art outlining Rio’s past and even 1950s tourist posters. Make your way to the MAR now!
