In this 18th century mansion with an elegant façade that is as photograph-worthy as the photos displayed inside, the Musée de l’Elysée is one of the first and few (to this day) museums in the whole of Europe that is devoted to photography in its entirety. Since its opening in October 1985, the museum has attracted many and gained international recognition for its collections. The museum houses about 120,000 original prints, which occupy eight rooms all spread out in the mansion’s four levels. As you step inside, you might be drawn to the vaulted cellars and roofs themselves before heading to the exhibitions.

Ella Maillart and Nicolas Bouvier both left their life’s works to the museum after their deaths, and the museum acquired all of Charlie Chaplin’s photographs that were taken throughout his career. The museum, with its temporary exhibitions, proves to be a delight for budding photographers and professionals alike, and it will definitely inspire all visitors, regardless of their interest in the medium. Naturally, it is renowned as a center of expertise in conservation and enhancement of visual heritage, and it supports young photographers by challenging and stimulating them with their various displays. Don’t miss out on a visit to the Musée de l’Elysée while you’re in Lausanne!
