Murano Island (Isola di Murano)

Let your eyes be dazzled in this paradise of glass.

Murano Island is not only famous for its colorful houses but more importantly, as a Mecca for glass-making. Prominent glass makers were so valued that they were forbidden to leave Italy or risk being assassinated. So revered were they that by the late 14th century, the daughters of glassmakers were allowed to marry into Venice's elite families. Learn about the history of glass-making at the Museo del Vetro, which also displays glass samples ranging from Egyptian times to the present day. A fantastic place to buy souvenirs, be spoilt for choice at the ubiquitous glass shops on Murano, where you will be able to find anything and everything made of glass, from jewelry to paperweights and other knick-knacks!
