Mulholland Drive

Before the movie, it was a road that was taken to a vantage point where the “Hollywood” sign could be seen to onlookers amazement.

At the mention of “Mulholland Drive”, to the non-native Californian, it is almost always associated with the movie that is by converging consensus of many authorities on such a subject matter, to be the greatest movie of the 21st century, directed by critically acclaimed auteur, David Lynch. And thus with the movie’s many cinematic accolades and success lending great cultural significance to what is supposedly as remarkable as any other road like it- made of black tar and bearing indicators painted in white, except that it’s most said of it being noticeably relatively torturous. That said, long before the eponymous movie brought the street greater fame, Mulholland Drive was already a celebrity of sorts, famous for leading visitors to a lookout point offering an unobstructed view of the San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles Basin and Tinsel Town’s Hollywood Sign in its majestic entirety. In daylight, the superb scenery seen from the lookout point presents a picture of calm orderliness, hiding the usual internal tumult and chaos within the city of “Fallen Angels”. But at night, as with a lady, dressed in a debonair, form fitting black dress of darkest nocturnal black accentuated by an accessories of the purest of diamond make, radiating blinding lustrous sparkles, in arm synchronised in purpose and motion towards the town’s most ritzy evening soirées, the city wearing night’s black is illuminated into a dazzling display of twinkling iridescence. To some this sight of light bursting defiantly against celestial cycle is a testament to mankind’s victory over inevitable night that may be awe inspiring, and to others, the bright lights that draw interlopers’ gazes away from those whose agenda is to engage in activities best in anonymity are a refuge.
