This castle’s exciting history begins in 1280, when Count Floris V built it along the river to collect tolls and control trade. However, shortly after it was built, he was killed and the castle destroyed, only to be rebuilt in 1370 by the Duke of Bavaria. Since then, it has hosted a score of illustrious owners, most notably P.C. Hooft, a famous 17th century author, poet and historian, who would regularly invite scholars and artists to the castle.

Today, the castle is a national museum, and its interior has been decorated to recreate what it looked it in the 17th century, at the height of its glory. You can go on one of the various museum tours to marvel at the historical artefacts and learn more about the castle’s story, or admire the beautiful garden featuring both decorative flowers bushes as well as vegetable and herb gardens.
