What makes us laugh? The comics section of the newspaper perhaps? The Museo del Humour, or Muhu for short, pays homage to the colourful illustrations that so often tickle our funnybone. It describes the entire colourful history of Argentinian comics, which have earned their name with memorable characters and concepts. It’s a rich and vibrant scene brimming with local artists, who popped up especially during the Golden Age of the 20th century. Today, the museum houses just over 100 framed illustrations, from caricatures to cartoons to comic illustrations. Every character has a place, from the drawings of overdressed ladies in 19th century newspapers to original copies of the first mass popular weekly. Argentina’s graphic humour has a slightly defiant tone, made evident in the scathing commentary behind satirical drawings in the preserved El Mosquito and Don Quijote newspapers. But no matter how serious the subject matter, the deft artists nimbly portray it in a lighthearted manner. A stroll down the aisles will surely bring a smile to your face.
