Mt. Merbabu (Gunung Merbabu)

Mountain of Ash.

Draped on all sides in luscious forestry that lends the mountain’s jagged appearance of rock a florid spread of summer’s soft mature green, wrapped in a sparkling thin veil of pre-dawn mist reflecting the shimmering halo of waning moonlight. And though all appears to be inactive in the silence of the dark night hours, there are fuzzy glowing specks that still remain illuminated without any sign of weakening that belong to the campers who had bested the steep ascent past nature’s floral barrier of soft summer green the day before such as to better ambush and behold the break of dawn luminous effulgence painting the sky with the colour of orange warmth. Tonight, the campers will wait in the comforts of cooling temperatures and sleep in the embrace of a night purely illuminated only by the twinkling stars, unpolluted by the artificial lights of man’s invention, that is gifted to those who have hiked to the summit of the volcano.

Tips Before You Go
Register with the National Park office before attempting to hike. Travel up first from Kopeng then switch to the Selo for an easier time. Proximity to the sun due to the mountain elevation warrants bringing protection from the sun.
