Mount Wellington

Once the playing fields of the Tasmanian Devils, Mount Wellington remains the dominion of the wild and greater outdoors of Australia.

In the heart of Mount Wellington National Park lies Mount Wellington, known to the aborigines as Kunanyi. From afar, it appears to be covered in a blanket of green, skirted by a rim of thick white clouds. Walking and horse riding trails snake their way beneath the blanket of green, past the sound of gallons of water hitting the scattered boulders and rock floor before a waterfall. Thick columns of temperate trees gradually give way to the thin needle-like trunks of the sub-alpine before finally giving way to brush vegetation and ice cold rock. Dusty paths mark out the infamous Zig Zag track with its sharp turns and brush-lined sides which you can hurtle down. The Organ Pipes tracks lead to packed columns of flecked grey dolerite which rock-climbing enthusiasts can pull themselves up. The Ferndale and Pinnacle tracks are lighter on their physical demands, leading up to the boulder strewn promontory of the mountain top. A single glass-walled observatory is a quiet sanctuary away from the blustering winds and clawing cold which often catches visitors completely unaware. Feet planted on the edge of the giant boulders spread about the peak, take in the sights charting the path to Bruny Island in the south, the lush green jewel of Maria Island to the north and the lively and loud city of Hobart by the mountain’s feet. A startling scrapbook of the four seasons, wildlife and thriving plants, Mount Wellington is the great Australian Outback within reach of your fingertips.
