The grass-covered, peaceful Mount Wakakusa is a mountain just behind Nara Parkthat allows visitors to scale her gentle slopes all year round except during winter. The mountain’s peak provides one with beautiful, expansive and unhindered views encompassing the city of Nara. The slopes of this mountain are exceptionally beautiful in Spring - lined with cherry trees, they come alive in full bloom in April, transforming the grassy landscape with beautiful hues of pink. If you do visit in winter, Mount Wakakusa is still worth a visit - every fourth Saturday of January, her slopes of dead grass are burnt in the magnificent Wakakusa Yamayaki! After setting the mountain ablaze, fireworks display illuminate the night skies along with the flames - a truly spectacular sight to behold.
