Mount Rigi

This “Queen of Mountains” offers an experience fit for Royalty.

Mount Rigi is not your ordinary mountain trip; a simple journey to the top, some hurried picture taking, before heading back down to familiar ground. The views from the highest peak, Rigi Klum, are undeniably breathtaking with a 360 degree view of 13 lakes and circling peaks including of course, that of great Mount Pilatus. And while there are indeed a variety of scenic cog railways to the top that will doubtless yield some of the best photos you’ll ever snap, the mountain has forged a reputation as itself as more than just a vantage point, but rather an activity centre for travellers from all walks of life, all year round.

Hiking is a popular activity when the temperature warms up in summer, with an array of hiking trails that will leave you invigorated by the sights, sounds and surroundings of Rigi. For those with a taste for unusual dining spots - and a strong stomach - book yourself in for a fine dining experience like no other suspended high above the earth in the aerial cable car restaurant.

You might think the mountain quietens down when winter rolls around, but the reality is quite the opposite. When snow blankets the slopes, the skiers, snowboarders, and sledders flock to the hills ready to maximise the cold weather. An all natural ice rink attracts people of all ages to have fun slipping and sliding on the ice - or gliding seamlessly along if you know what you’re doing! Horse-drawn carriages are another unique experience that many tourists opt for to create that truly magical winter feel. Warm up by a cosy fire, chow down on melty raclette and indulge in the classic fondue feast, dipping delicious food into even more delicious molten cheese. The many wellness spas are crowd-pleasers because come on, who doesn’t swoon at the idea of unwinding in a heated candle lit mineral bath, sweating it out in a sauna, and soothing tired muscles in a massage?

The cows dotting with hills, the gentle ringing of their bells the only sound interrupting the peaceful silence of the mountains, and the lakes so brilliantly turquoise they seem almost fake, come together to create the ultimate Swiss experience that you will not soon forget.

Tips Before You Go
Go on the classic or panorama hikes which are relatively easy with gentle slopes. Take a picnic on one of the benches along the cliffside hiking trail, which offer a fresh perspective with lesser known but no less impressive views. In summer, classic steam engines regularly chug along the slopes, white puffs billowing out behind them, a scene which delights locals and visitors alike.
