Mount Nebo

A peaceful and plain mountaintop view that carries some sort of divine symbolism.

Biblical records state that Moses stood atop this mountain, overlooking The Promised Land, the destination in which he was forbidden to enter, and lived his final days here. It is widely believed that he died and was buried on Mount Nebo, but the exact burial location is unknown. In 6th century AD, monks had constructed a Byzantine church and monastery, of which their remains were only discovered in 1933. From the peak of this mountain, 710m above sea level, you’ll be granted a bird’s eye spectacle over areas of the Dead Sea, the Jordan River, West Jordan, and even Jerusalem.

Make sure to visit the church to view the beautiful and abstract mosaics that decorate the floors and walls of the sanctuary, chapel and the interior of the basilica. Six tombs were also found hollowed into the rock beneath the church’s mosaic floor. These mosaics are remnants from different periods, and depict a variety of imagery such as winemaking, hunters and animals. Outside, there is an awe-inspiring sculpture of the Serpentine Cross, created by Italian artist Giovanni Fantoni as a symbolic combination of Moses’s life-saving bronze serpent and the cross of Jesus.
