Mount Kaukau
Discover the wonderful gems of Mount Kaukau.
Rising 445m above sea level, Mount Kaukau derived its name from Tarikākā which means 'where the parrots rested'. In fact, bird-lovers will be thrilled to spot the native kākā flying around the verdant forest on the slopes of Mount Kaukau. This mountain is part of the oldest park in New Zealand, the Khandallah Park.
With a massive forest of 60ha and 9km of walking trails, it is highly recommended to trek through the gorgeous canopies of trees and listen to the sweet songs of indigenous birds such as the Kererū and Tūī. Head for the summit and be rewarded with awesome views of Wellington city and the picturesque promenade along the harbour.
