Mount Edith Cavell

One of Alberta’s most popular mountains, and rightly so.

Resting within the river valleys of Jasper National Park, Mount Edith Cavell is a mountain not to be missed. Named in 1916 in honor of Nurse Edith Cavell, who helped soldiers to escape during World War I at the cost of her own life, this massive mountain has its peak at a staggering elevation of 3363m. With stunning glaciers and wildlife such as marmots, lynxes and birds along the way, it is no wonder that this is one of the most popular mountains in Alberta.

To fully appreciate the natural wonders around you, take a hike up the Glacier trail. Along your journey, you will encounter the Angel Glacier, a glacier that looks like an angel spreading her wings, with her elegant robe draping down the side of the cliff, and the Cavell Glacier with its distinct layers. Sitting to the left of Angel Glacier is the Ghost Glacier, which is rapidly depleting. When you get to the top, you can see the azure blue waters of Cavell Pond below, making your hike up Mount Edith Cavell well worth it. If you look closer, you can see dots of icebergs floating in the water, all in various shades of blue.

Tips Before You Go
The road here usually opens around mid-June and closes around mid-October. If climbing the trail, make sure you wear shoes with good traction, as it can get slippery. Peak season is from July to August, so avoid these months if you are keen on bypassing the crowds. For the photographers among you, the best light on the glaciers is in the early morning.
