The Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut, otherwise known as the Djeser-Djeseru (Holy of Holies), is an ancient mortuary temple situated in Egypt. It was built for the eighteenth dynasty pharaoh Hatshepsut and is situated beneath the cliffs at Deir el Bahari near the Valley of the Kings. It was also dedicated to Amun, the god of the sun, and has been named one of the ‘incomparable monuments of ancient Egypt’. If you were to visit, you will be able to see why. The moment you step foot into the temple, you will observe that the interior is filled with inscriptions retelling the divine birth of Hatshepsut, who was the very first female pharaoh. There are many statues of her scattered throughout the temple, a tribute to her, all staring resolutely at whoever dares to step foot inside. Two statues of the god Osiris can also be found here, although it is believed that there were more originally. In fact, many of the artefacts and structures here have either been destroyed or stolen, which is why the reconstruction of the temple may seem rather sparse inside. And yet, despite the lack of decorations, the magnificence inside is undeniable.
