A monastery believed to grant women fertility!
Tsampika Monastery is situated about 26km from Rhodes City and the journey there takes a turn off the main road, before the turn to the beach nearby. The road leads visitors up the hill which have to be embarked by foot for about 350 steps. At the top of the hill, you will see a Byzantine church which was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the monastery is atop a hill of about 300m high.
Offering stunning aerial views over the coast, the uphill climb is no doubt worth it! It is also believed that women facing difficulties in giving birth should climb the hill barefooted to pray to the Virgin for fertility and in most times, their faith is exchanged for offspring. If it happens, the boy to be born is named Tsampikos and the girl Tsampika - apparently, this is easily proven by the number of Tsampikoses and Tsampikas on Rhodes Island!
