Windmills are an intrinsic part of Leiden’s history, as well as an undeniable part of what makes the city what it is today. The original mill is known to have existed as far back as 1619, although it was burnt down a few decades later. Rebuilt in 1729, this mill suffered damage again in 1817, leaving behind only the octagonal foundation of the mill stronghold.

It was in 1983 that the mill was once again re-constructed, gaining a municipal monument status along the way. When you visit, be awed by the architectural triumph that is the windmill, and drop by on a Saturday to catch the sale of mill byproducts like flour. You can even get your hands on pancake flour and rye flours!
