Island of Oahu, United States of America
Mokoli’I (Chinaman’s Hat)

The island, to mean Little Lizard in native Hawaiian, is a vigilant watcher of the dancing waves.

Feet firmly anchored into one of nature’s designs made of rock and earth, seemingly shaped ever ready to pierce the stratosphere and into space, the force of the Hawaiian winds that have travelled unobstructed from the sea’s horizon brush into the lush foliage of the island, gives some inkling to the island’s form that oddly resembles that of a Chinaman Hat. Being a relatively difficult structure to conquer on foot, especially its hill, take a moment to appreciate the separation from the larger island of Kualoa Point, and as with the back turned towards it, layers the feelings of awe and pride with a deft sense of isolation made all the more ostentatious by the surrounding expanse of waters stretching far out into monotonous horizontal homogeneity of the ocean that is only generous enough to allow the sun’s and moon’s respective reflections to rest on. From the grass that grows mostly around the prominent raised edge feature of the island, lain on the back, breathing in warm salty air lifted by a constant breeze, the world seems so far away, and now is all that matters.
