Mohammed VI Museum of Modern & Contemporary Art

Visit Morocco’s first large-scale museum built in a combination of exquisite Islamic and elegant contemporary styles.

Oh no, this isn’t a mausoleum or a palace. It’s not even a gateway. This spectacular white building is actually the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMVI), which is in fact Morocco’s first large scale museum. The sleek and contemporary design is married with traditional Islamic architecture, creating a totally unique identity that is definitely eye-opening. Construction was only finished in 2014, and since it is rather new, its collection is still being expanded upon. In the meantime, it showcases the works of prominent local artists such as Jilali Gharbaou and Ahmed Cherkaoui. If you were expecting something more traditional, well, these artists were more acclaimed for their abstract works. So like any modern art museum, you can expect to see thought-provoking abstract pieces of art on display here rather than traditional paintings. But they do add splashes of colour to this white building.
