Moderna Museet

Openmindedness, experimentation, and progressiveness are qualities that are requirements for art to flourish, and this museum prides itself on having all of the above, and more.

With a focus on creating a sort of spiritual dialogue between the artwork and the audience, the museum museet displays contemporary art from the twentieth century to today. It also prides itself on the close relationship it shares with the artists that choose to work hand in hand with the museum to showcase their masterpieces, for example Andy Warhol has his very first solo museum exhibition in Europe at this museum. Works by Picasso, Dali, Derkert, and Matisse are among the museum’s 6,000 paintings, sculptures and installations, 25,000 watercolours, drawings and prints, 400 art videos and films, and 100,000 photographs.

The museum has continued to grow its already impressive collection, most recently placing emphasis on female artists like Louise Bourgeois, Dorothea Tanning, Judy Chicago, and Susan Hiller, in keeping with its forward thinking mindset. Set on the tranquil, quaint and picturesque island of Skeppsholmen, it makes the visit an all round enjoyable experience that complements the artwork as a whole.

Tips Before You Go
When walking across the bridge onto Skeppsholmen, turn left and walk up the stairs on the hill. The Modern Museum is in the second row of buildings past the Museum of Antiquities of the Far East. If you follow the road, you will wind through the island which is a longer walk to the museum. This longer walk will give you a great look at the island and let you see the sculpture garden.
