Mission San Carlos Borroméo del río Carmelo

A historic mission church now a historical and cultural hotspot!

Classified as a National Historic Landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places, Mission San Carlos Borromeo del río Carmelo is a Roman Catholic mission church, and was the headquarters of the Alta California missions led by Saint Junípero Serra in the 17th century. This historic church is also the only California Mission to still be in possession of its original bell tower dome.


Today, this beautiful place is an active Roman Catholic Church, and also holds concerts, lectures, community events and art exhibits. It is also a museum responsible for safeguarding the mission’s rich history and the history of Carmel-by-the-Sea.
