Milazzo Castle (Castello di Milazzo)

Fortification after fortification, it’s an onion of a fortress.

The imposing structure of stone that bears a more refined design is suggestive of its age that is comparable to the megalithic structures of very old, and like the layers of a croissant, or lasagna, or...basically Castello di Milazzo, more citadel than castle, really, is a composite product of many fortification efforts that is reflective of the conquerors’ culture over the centuries. First, closest to the center of the structure is indigenous Neolithic, then the Greeks who moved in made it into an acropolis, adding walls to the castle, followed by the Romans and Byzantines, then the Arabs, Normans, Swabians, Aragons, Spanish and, finally, falling into the hands of the Italian who had converted the building into a prison. There had been so much that had passed since its founding that just by studying the walls, some more worn with age than the others, would be to read from a tapestry of a detailed record of the lives led by the denizens during the specific reigns of the various cultures.
