Michael Joseph Savage Memorial Park

In remembrance of the founder of the Welfare State.

Just as its name says, the Michael Joseph Savage Memorial Park is dedicated to the 23rd prime minister (and the very first Labour one), Michael Joseph Savage (1872 – 1940). Overlooking the Waitemata Harbour, the site is built on a former gun emplacement dating back to the 1880s. Amongst the attractions in this park are its tall obelisk and mausoleum, sunken pool and landscaped gardens, all of which are the reason why many visitors and locals come to this park. Besides honouring the former prime minister, this 49-hectare park also provides sweeping views of the harbour, Auckland city and the Whenua Rangatira.

Tips Before You Go
The memorial is situated further away from other landmarks, so you can expect a relaxing day with very little visitors. Besides making a great picnic spot, it is also recommended that visitors bring binoculars. You might just end up being able to catch the sight of boats racing!
