Miami Design District

Everything high culture in one place.

Just as San Francisco is known for its frequent earthquakes, great waves of change born of a momentum by the will of Craig Robins, property developer, has been for over nearly 2 decades, washing over Buena Vista, Miami, and each time, in its wake, a piece of contemporary culture become lodged in the very same spot in the corner of once dilapidated downtown that is now referred to the Miami Design District. First came the wave of posh interior design and furniture stores. Then followed a number of luxury brand names of international repute, including. Louis Vuitton, Prada and Gucci, planting their gleaming store front signages of chrome and high gloss that officially mark the keystone moment when the Miami Design District of today was conceived. As “today” became yesterday, and tomorrow is now today, the Miami Design District has of late seen massive development efforts directed towards enhancing the cultural value and appeal of the District. Beyond basic capitalistic agenda, the district is now home to the Institute of Contemporary Arts, Miami, an ideal constructed of brushed silver and glass, advocating and providing completely free access to works of art. There is now so much art in the district that seems to have overflowed by the confines of the Institute, spilling onto the streets as a skeleton sleeping in a bus stop and a bust of Le Corbusier of exact proportions to the famous French architect’s own bust, if he were still alive today.

Even wave after wave, culture is ever relentlessly evolving, when one day it was Picasso and another Francis Bacon, the future of the district and of its discipline to continually stay ahead of the times, is surely for anticipation and attention for when it will once again experience a grand change. Watch out New York.
