MIA Park

A bustling sanctuary of desert greens that abounds with endless attractions for its visitors.

Seeking to strike a chord of its own amidst the flurry of city parks and urban green spaces that have been set up, the MIA Park is a unique outlier against the dusty landscape and harsh metal tones of Doha. With palms and desert brush adding texture to the grass lawns, MIA Park places a unique spin on the design of urban parklands. Let your children ride the colorful ducks and parrots at a lively carousel or bounce in open mouthed glee at the bungee trampoline. In the meantime, you can grab a picnic basket set from one of the park stalls to surprise the kids with later, savoring the meal by the bay. The waters of the bay are often filled with wakeboards slicing through the water and foaming trails left by the jet skis with many more water sports options that can be explored. Against the setting sun, one can pedal away by the promenade with the still waters falling away to your side as the colors of the sun stain the waters in shades of purple and warm yellows.

In the cooler months of winter, the parks walkways come alive with colors splashed across as tents and stalls are set up for the annual bazaar. Each year hundreds of home-based entrepreneurs gather to hawk hand woven textiles, beaded accessories, toys and souvenirs that would be hard to come by anywhere else. The lawns of the park are filled with lively rhythms of jazz as visitors bop to the beat at the various musical concerts held in this period. An intercontinental spread awaits at the food aisle of the bazaar, featuring delicacies from as far abroad as Thailand, the Philippines, Turkey, Malaysia and India to excite the taste buds of visitors. A hive of activity and entertainment, there won’t be a minute to spare at the MIA Park.

Tips Before You Go
Situated right next to the iconic Museum of Islamic Arts, the MIA Park has its fair share of public arts installations as well. The most notable of these has to be the ‘7’, a gargantuan 80 foot high tower of steel designed and assembled by the American artist, Richard Serra. Believed to be the pinnacle of his works, the structure is a hexagonal arrangement of 7 steel plates. Sporadic patches of red rust across spots touched by the corrosive sea spray give the monument an uneven texture and chromatic gradient that adds to the appeal and memorable nature of the tower. The feature isn’t just an artistic marvel but a scientific wonder for having been designed to withstand strong winds, potential earthquakes and most debilitating of all, the vast temperature gradients of the Middle East.
