The Meteora is a beautiful rock landscape situated in central Greece and it sits one of the largest complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries in the world. The complex comprises six monasteries which are precariously established on rounded boulders and natural pillars.


Situated near Kalambaka town near the Pineios river and Pindus mountain range, it earned the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage status under several categories and its name translates into ‘elevated’, like a meteor in the sky would be. Several monasteries worth visiting here include the Monastery of Great Meteoron, the Monastery of Varlaam and the Monastery of the Holy Trinity, all found atop the rock formations.
