Menara Gardens (Pavillion Menara)

Admire this age-old garden that was constructed in the 12th century.

Situated to the west of Marrakesh and with a surface of more than 100 hectares, the Menara Gardens is a generously laid-out park that was built in the 12th-century by the Almohad Caliphate ruler Abd al-Mu’min.

Laid out around a central basin, the botanical garden is home to orchards and olive groves. Indeed, with many lanes meandering between the countless olive trees dotted around the Menara, visitors can simply recline for a moment in the shade to just soak in the vibrant atmosphere of the Menara. The basin is 150 meters wide and about 200 meters long. Dozens of carps inhabit the muddy water – and many visitors find it thrilling to indulge them with freshly baked bread. Just like at the palace, you can sit down on a tribune and indulge in the unique panorama of the pavilion in front of the Grand Atlas Mountains. Looking into the distance, you will recognize the imposing line of sight with a direct view on Koutoubia Mosque in the distance.

A wide promenade lined with vendors of souvenirs, sweets and beverages leads from the entrance area directly to the central basin and the photogenic pavilion – a palace from the Saadian era. While the Menara may not seem as extravagant as the Majorelle, it surely is less intimidating and more family-friendly, with a higher proportion of local families electing to spend their afternoon here. That being said, you should spend one afternoon here to enjoy what this simple yet spectacular garden has to offer!
