Safely secluded from the cacophany of the rest of the world is a lacustrine cave in Kefalonia, Greece, known as the Melissani Cave. From the outside, this cave is enveloped by a lush green rainforest. The cave can only be entered through an underground tunnel that leads directly into the heart of the cave, where the Melissani Lake resides. According to Greek mythology, it is believed that a nymph named Melissani, who was heartbroken because of her unrequited love for Pan, threw herself into these waters and tragically, died. If you intend to see the lake, you will have to take a boat ride to reach it. The best time to visit this place is on a sunny day because that is when the lake is illuminated by the sun’s rays, transforming into a sparkling shade turquoise that makes your boat look as if it’s floating on sheer air. As you sit in your boat, look up and marvel at this magnificent gift that nature has bestowed on humanity, along with echoes of water lapping up against the paddles in the background, you can’t help but feel one with the Universe.
