Medieval City Wall

Fragments of the city’s double fortifications scattered throughout the inner city.

The Medieval City Wall is the remnants of the city’s double fortifications built separately in the 12th and 14th century. Many fragments can be found in the Jekerkwartier district, a historic hub filled with old churches and monasteries. The best-preserved stretch is Onze Lieve Vrouwewal, a city wall street that coasts along City Park. Atop the wall lies a quaint cobbled street, where you can enjoy scenic walks in the tranquil atmosphere. The stretch between the river Jeker and the street Nieuwenhofstraat is yet another spot to enjoy a quiet stroll – from atop the wall with panoramic views, from the street side, or from the river side in City Park. But the best segments might be found in Lang Grachtje and Klein Grachtje, both which harbour beguiling street walks cloistered between medieval walls and gorgeous flora creeping along residential walls. Meanwhile, the short section beside city gate Helpoort houses a charming café and an art exhibition centre, where you can sit out in the warm sunshine with a cup of coffee in hand or explore the gems hidden within the walls. With so many scenic city walls, you will stumble upon one before you even know it.
