Mdina Ditch Gardens

The ditch of the fortified city of Mdina restored to house a garden.

Looking like a setting right out of a fantasy book, it’s no wonder than the walled city of Mdina was a prominent filming location for the Game of Throne TV show, with its huge Baroque-style gate from the 18th century. The Silent City, as it’s called, used to be Malta’s capital in medieval times. Like many walled cities, Mdina had a ditch to strengthen fortifications built in the 15th century and then rebuilt in the 18th.

Until its restoration, completed in 2015, the ditch area used to have over 300 citrus, olive and cypress trees. They were largely removed when the garden was restored, to offer a better view of the Mdina’s bastions.

While the ditch-turned-garden itself is beautiful to relax (there are several benches along the path) on your trip to Mdina, it isn’t just for show as the cleared space now offers itself up to many fairs and concerts.

Tips Before You Go
The gardens are accessible to everyone, including visitors using wheelchairs as there is a lift from the carpark as well as paved roads. The best time to visit the gardens would be in the early morning or late afternoon, as the overhead sun is quite unbearable during the midday, especially because the removal of the trees leaves little shade.
